The Princess of Wales's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a message before the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
