On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Several parts of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe level established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times above safe levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Changes

Since 2020, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that blankets the city as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed city government approached the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court complied with the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered contamination spiking around the night hours to some of the worst readings observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the city have continued as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to various studies.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k early fatalities annually in the city.
